Nestled in the vibrant Hanoi neighborhood of Ngô Thì Nhậm, The Root Boardgame Cafe is a haven for board game enthusiasts and casual players alike. This cafe is not just a spot to grab a drink; it’s a community gathering place that celebrates the joy of play. As you ascend the slightly hidden entrance on the second floor, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels more like a cozy living room than a commercial establishment.

The Root distinguishes itself with an impressive selection of board games that caters to every type of player—from strategic heavyweights to light-hearted party games. Picture yourself immersing in classics like Ticket to Ride or getting creative with Dixit. The caring staff is always on hand to offer guidance, ensuring that even newcomers feel at ease. Many customers have praised the friendly, accommodating service, enhancing their overall enjoyment. Hélène Andreu noted, “We spent an amazing night here... the people are so helpful and friendly,” highlighting the personalized attention that sets The Root apart.

As for refreshments, The Root offers delicious iced drinks that perfectly complement the gaming experience—a must-try, as suggested by multiple reviews. Sipping on a refreshing mojito as you strategize your next move is just one element of the delightful sensory experience The Root provides. Casey-Brooke Mann captures the ambiance perfectly, expressing that “such a good atmosphere” kept them engaged for hours. Moreover, the cafe offers an effortlessly relaxing vibe, where patrons can feel comfortable losing track of time amid laughter and friendly competition.

The fun doesn’t stop at just board games and drinks; The Root also encourages camaraderie among players through its selection of free and paid games, making it easy to jump in and join the fun without breaking the bank. As F411en pointed out, it boasts “the biggest selection of games in this city,” making it a prime destination for enthusiasts from near and far. Plus, the small fee associated with some of the newer games is a worthy investment in an unforgettable experience.

In summary, The Root Boardgame Cafe is more than just a cafe; it’s a sanctuary for connection through gaming. Whether you’re escaping the rain, like Rane Astrid Yenko, or simply looking for a place to unwind and have fun, you’ll find that The Root not only meets expectations but exceeds them with its charm, extensive game library, and community spirit. So gather your friends, grab a drink, and immerse yourself in the world of board games—your next adventure awaits.

My favorite board cafe in Hanoi. Super friendly staff and owners l. Great drinks and a huge selection of board games. I think they have the biggest selection of games in this city. The entrance is kinda hard to find, it’s on the second floor of the building. And the bike parking is behind the building, through a market. The parking is free after you buy a drink. If you are a board game lover this is a must stop, game masters also speak English and can play with you if they are not too busy.

A really nice little space that feels more like someone's living room than a commercial cafe. You can buy drinks and choose board games from their large collection on the shelves. There's small fees to pay for playing some of the more involved/newer games but nothing crazy. Also they have all kinds of games, well known classics, strategy heavy nerdy stuff, easy to learn quick games... Something for everyone and the people who run the place are happy to explain any new games to customers. Recommend coming here especially when it's either rainy or too hot out! PSA: there's cats hanging out in the front room. I'm slightly allergic and didn't notice any effects though. Edit: forgot to mention one criticism: the bathroom could be a bit cleaner!

Found this place as shelter from the rain! It was an unexpected yet welcome find down an alley. The staff is friendly and really helpful at explaining the cafe's concept (how they price boardgames, there are some fun free ones you can play if you order a drink). They also offer to initially facilitate some games to teach the customers how to play. Only downside (?) I ordered the mojito which should be alcoholic, but there's barely any kick to it for the price, so I recommend ordering something else if something to make you tipsy is what you're looking for. Anyway they still have many drink options . Still a great place to hangout with friends ~~

Excellent game selection, from simple all the way up to complex games and even campaign games. We had a great time trying out Terraforming Mars. They charge by the game, with more complex/games with more components costing more. The huge Root mural wall was beautiful. Main issue is the place could have been cleaner - it felt quite dusty overall, and there were some ants around. Can get noisy depending on the groups there but that's understandable.

Great place to come, chill and play board games. This place has plenty of different board games to try. Staring with the simpler ones, getting to the most complex games. The staff has super friendly approach and explains the game for you when it is your first time playing it. They speak very good English. There are plenty drink options to choose from. I recommend choosing something less sugary as the drinks are too sweet for me. I really like this place and would recommend it to any boardgame lover!
